Out and About in the Digiworld - So Much Style

As I took my weekly tour around digiland today, I was struck by the wide variety of style out there and the multitude of wonderfully well-designed products available for nearly every taste and scrap style.

Check out this beautiful quick page freebie on Irene Alexeeva's blog. I love the style, but I don't scrap this way, so it's nice to have a well-done quick page to add variety to my scrapbook.

You can pick up the MakeBelieve page set in Irene's Scrap Orchard store.

If tend to the funky-side of style; the neutral color scheme of Sausan Design's Altered Artistry Doodled Tags and Frames assures they go with nearly any theme or color palette and yet they still have oodles of funky style and personality.

If cute and whimsical is your thing (it's one of my favorite approaches to scrapping my baby girl), Kristin Aagard's Lovey Buggies are simply adorable. If I was going to make my son's valentine's myself (which I'm not), I'd use these. As it is, I still might pick them up for my scrap stash.

Carrie Stephens took a creative approach to her kids' fears of monsters. She simply outlawed the monsters from the room. You can download her poster on her blog.

Two Sisters Designs is retiring from designing full time. Their shop at We Are Storytellers is 50% off through the end of January.

Amy Wolff's Puddle Jumpers are embellished papers that serve as a jumpstarter for your own pages. Great idea Amy!

Class Clown by amystoffel combines clever composition with a great sense of humor.

I really like AshleyKennedy's use of stitching, irregular cropping and black and white photos in you are my joy. She's made the template available on her blog. Thanks Ashley and to the blog reader who alerted me to the template.

Out and About in the Digiworld - Goodbyes, Hellos and a Happy Birthday

Andrea Burns is retiring. We will miss you Andrea. Everything in her store is 60% off through the end of January (discount will be applied at checkout).

Christy Sturm is closing Butternug Squash and everything is 75% off through January. You can pick page sets, elements, commercial use items at a steal. Two page templates created to emphasize photos and journaling, like the one show below are just $.38 each or $1.31 for a set of 4.

ScrapbookBytes is turning 6 and will be celebrating with chats and events all day tomorrow (1/25). You can read more about it their forums here. They are also welcoming two new designers, Shawnery Mathis and Armina Designs. I'm enchanted by Shawnery's Autumn Wash Papers. These would be perfect for scrapping little artists.

Check out the Little Dream Designs blog for a wonderful post on creative ways to use storyboards. You'll find a tutorial, beautiful layout inspiration and a freebie jumpstart your own page.

Where do you go when you are looking for something specific in digiscrapland? If you've checked your favorite shops and still haven't quite found what you are looking for, there are several sites that allow designers from all over the web to post their product previews. The newest such site is DigiScrapFinder sponsored by the folks at ACDSee. Other such sites include Digital Scrapbook Previews, and the DST Product Gallery.

I was looking through the DST gallery for inspiration and fell in love with the composition and striking colors in JanaO's page, Croatia 2008. Reading her credits I see she did this for the template challenge at Pixel Canvas. Check out the challenge post for loads of gorgeous inspiration (and pick up the template free).

Creative Clipping Masks

SUBJECT:
Using digital scrapbooking elements as clipping masks
LEVEL: Beginner
PROGRAM: Tutorial written for PSCS2 and PSCS3, compatible with PSE

Have you ever found yourself liking the basic shape of a frame, journaling mat or border, but wishing it a different color? Or perhaps you've been scrapping and needed a square frame, only to find there isn't one in the kit you are using. Using elements as clipping masks is a great way to use your scrap stash in a new way and customize items for your specific needs.

Start by opening the element you'll be using as a shape (clipping mask). In my case, I'll be using a scalloped-edge frame from Happy Birthday Baby Girl. File >Open.

Search your supplies for a background paper to 'clip' to the shape and open it. File>Open.

Click on the background paper and drag it onto the element canvas. The background paper should completely cover the element.

Now 'Clip' the background paper to the element as follows:

PSCS2 - Ctrl+Alt+G or Layer>Create Clipping Mask
PSE - Ctrl+G

If you like the result, go Layer>Merge Down and you have a customized element ready for use.

If you see yourself using this technique often, when you find a shape you like in a kit, consider 'clipping' a plain black background paper to the element. Save the shape in a 'Clipping Masks' folder and create library of various shaped frames, mats, borders, etc. for future use.

Papers and elements appearing in this tutorial are from Happy Birthday Baby Girl and Daddy's Apprentice from Misty Cato, available at Sweet Shoppe Designs.

If you still have holiday photos and want to get them scrapped fast, take a look at the beautiful Holiday Avenue Quick Pages created by April Rieff from Jen Wilson's, Holiday Avenue line.

Kitty Designs and Vinnie Pierce teamed up to create the funky and whimsical set, Wishes and Dreams.

Today's featured layouts are pages resulting from Project 365. Even if you aren't doing the photo-a-day thing, Project 365 layouts are still great inspiration points for multiphoto pages.

I like Leslie's approach to journaling in her Week One layout.

Great photo cropping and color blocking in 4noisyboys's Week 1.

New Releases - Heartstrings and Freebie

Heartstrings is my first release of 2009. This is a warm, cozy set that can be used to scrap Thanksgiving, Valentines and everyday photos of those you love.

Meredith Cardall created some wonderful quick pages with the set. You can pick up the combo pack and get both the page set and quick pages at a discount.

This set of Deckled-Edge Papers are great for layering or used alone as a background for your page.

Here is a page I did using on of the deckled-edge backgrounds. Every year flocks of snow geese make their temporary home on the farmlands in the Skagit Valley. Jamin got to stop and watch them during a recent trip to his grandparents.
